Understanding locations in Hiebert Library

You've found the call number for the item you need, and the computer tells you that it's available. But when you go to the shelf -- it's not there. What's wrong?

While it's possible that someone has removed the book without checking it out, you might also be looking in the wrong part of the library. Hiebert Library has several different "locations" for its holdings, and you need to know the difference before you go looking for the item you need.

The location of a particular item can be determined by looking at its record in the library discovery service. Every record will tell you that a particular item is available (or unavailable) at a specific location.

The following list tells you where you'll find the various locations in the library building:

Hiebert Library Main

Most books in the library are found at this location. You'll find them on the shelves on the north end of the library below and near the mezzanine, and in the central section of the library beneath the lower ceiling.

Hiebert Library Main Oversize

In order to use shelf space most efficiently, all books over 26 cm. in height (10.25") are shelved in their own location, in the central section of the library beneath the lower ceiling.

Hiebert Library Main Reference

Reference materials (such as encyclopedias and dictionaries) are shelved on the south end of the library, just beyond the circulation desk. These items may not be checked out.

Hiebert Library Main Reserve

Reserve items may be requested at the circulation desk.

Hiebert Library Main New Books

All new acquisitions are displayed on shelves to your immediate right as you come to the circulation desk. The computer results list will tell you that these items are "unavailable," but that isn't true. They are available to be checked out.

Hiebert Library Main Periodicals

All bound periodicals (journals and magazines) are shelved on the south end of the library, immediately after the reference section. These items may not be checked out from the library

Hiebert Library Main Audio-Visual

All music and video recordings may be requested at the library circulation desk.

Hiebert Library Main Microfilm

All microfilm items may be requested at the library circulation desk.

Mennonite Library

All these items (except for New Books) are available in the Mennonite Library & Archives, on the east end of the library. MLA New Books are on the lower right section of the New Books display in the main library. Most items in the Mennonite library circulate the same as main library items. The MLA is not open evenings or weekends.

Archives

Archival collections are available in the Mennonite Library & Archives. They may only be used in the MLA reading room during its regular hours.

AIMS Center

Books listed under the AIMS center are generally located within Hiebert Library Main collection, so within the stacks in the library.

You may consult a map of the library for additional information on where to find the various locations.
