What the library can -- and can't -- do for you

Hiebert Library is equipped to provide a wide range of information resources and services to the FPU community. But sometimes people come to the library looking for things that actually are only available elsewhere or that the library is unable to offer. Here are examples of what the library can and cannot do.

What the library can do:

  • Provide access to books, periodicals, streaming audio & video, and archival resources. Some of these will be available in the building while others will be available online. Most physical books can be borrowed (or "checked out") for a designated time at no charge to the user. Other resources (such as periodicals or archival material) can be used in the building. Online resources can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection.
  • Offer basic instruction on how to use the library discovery service and other tools available in the library.
  • Provide assistance finding resources relating to a particular research topic.
  • Request resources from other libraries if they aren't available directly from us.
  • Offer group instructional sessions on using the library or other information literacy topics.
  • Provide access to computers, printers, and a wi-fi network.
  • Provide group and individual study areas.

What the library can't  do:

  • Rent or sell textbooks. If you want to purchase or rent a textbook, you'll need to go to the campus bookstore.
  • Provide copies of all course textbooks. The library may have copies of some textbooks, but we do not have a policy of purchasing all of them.
  • Offer editorial assistance for research papers or other tutoring services, including help with citations. Those services are available from the Academic Success Center.
  • Offer technical support for computers and other technology devices (whether owned by the university or an individual). Contact Information Technology Services for assistance in that area.
